I am Dr. Charnetta Williams, a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist with over a decade of experience in the medical field. Although my journey as a healthcare professional has been incredibly fulfilling, it's just one facet of my life. I'm also a wife, a mother of two children, and a new children’s book author (eek!)

In 2019, I couldn't help but notice a glaring gap in the children’s book market—a lack of diversity. This realization prompted me to establish my company, Picture Perfect Reads. My company is on a mission to empower children, especially children of color, through books. I aim to diversify the children’s literary landscape because it’s so important for children to see themselves as the main characters in the stories we share with them. I also believe children’s picture books should do more than merely entertain; they should teach valuable life lessons and make parenting just a teeny bit easier. It was with this vision in mid that I embarked on my journey as an author.

My debut children's book, "Penelope and the Power of Positivity," tells the story of an 8-year-old girl from the Bronx with big dreams of becoming a doctor. Unfortunately, her dreams are constantly threatened by her two best friends, named Fear and Self-doubt. These two characters believe that Penelope's aspirations are way too big and way too scary, and they seize every opportunity to remind her of this. Each time they do, it stops her in her tracks. Through Penelope’s story, children learn that they possess the power within themselves to turn negative thoughts into positive ones. The goal is to help them develop a "growth mindset," one that firmly believes that skills and abilities can be developed over time with practice and determination. This life lesson is something I believe every parent wants their child to embrace.

While I currently have just one book in my collection, I'm far from finished. I am actively working on creating more children's books, each with its unique focus on entertaining kids and making the challenging journey of parenting a bit more manageable. I’m excited that you’ve decided to join me on this mission. Together, we can inspire the next generation to believe in themselves and embrace the limitless possibilities that await them.
